A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in May found that a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) could cost consumers at least $4 per year.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco found that Viagra, the prescription drug used to treat ED, increased sales by nearly $6 billion in the three years to 2005.
In the study, researchers analyzed data from more than 400,000 customers' prescriptions for the drug.
Viagra was the only drug that could help the treatment of ED. It was found to be associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction in both men with and without diabetes.
Viagra was also associated with a 69 percent increase in the sales of the drug, which Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, says is safe and effective. And it is not linked to a drop in the rate of diabetes.
Dr. Bruce M. Schreiber, head of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said: "This new analysis shows that the use of Viagra and other medications that treat ED are associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death, regardless of the dosage, class, frequency or duration of use."
"This study is the first to show that the use of drugs that treat ED is associated with an increased risk of cardiac events or death," said Dr. B. Schulman, associate professor of medicine and head of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
The study was published in the January issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The study, co-authored by researchers from the Kaiser Health Care Foundation, the University of California, San Francisco, the University of California San Francisco Medical Center and the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in California, was presented today at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology.
The researchers examined data on 400,000 American customers' prescriptions for the drug, which is prescribed to help men get and keep an erection.
The analysis found that men who used Viagra had an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death compared to those who did not use the drug.
Viagra and other drugs that treat ED are not known to increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes or death, according to the study's authors. But there is a risk of a heart attack or death when Viagra is used to treat ED.

Schulman, who also is an associate professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, said the new analysis shows that the use of drugs that treat ED is associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death, regardless of the dosage, class, frequency or duration of use.The study's authors said they are investigating the drug's potential effects on the heart.
"We are not sure what are the underlying mechanisms or whether other drugs that treat ED may have a similar effect," said M. J. Lechleiter, the study's co-author. "We will discuss the benefits and risks of each therapy, as well as their relative importance in the patient population."
Researchers said that although the study does not prove that Viagra or other drugs that treat ED cause cardiac events or death, the findings are important because they are the first to be published in the journal of the American Heart Association.
